For quite some time now, we have heard environmental catchphrases like ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’, ‘do your share for cleaner air’, and ‘the solution is less pollution’ in an attempt to increase environmental awareness.

However, it is no secret that global warming is continuing to rise at an alarming rate. In fact, the earth’s surface temperature in 2020 was around 0.98 Celsius degrees warmer than the 20th-century average.

Construction's Relationship with the Environment

Materials such as stone and aggregates are used every day in projects and have helped build some of the most magnificent structures around us today. However, the sand and gravel extraction of these resources comes at a cost to the environment. And by that, we mean loss of habitat and ecosystem, damage to landscape and noise pollution.

When it comes to energy consumption, considering direct use and embodied energy, the construction industry contributes to around 4.5% of the national total. Construction generates over 40 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Environmental Management Systems and Construction

The statistics shared so far may have got you thinking… as a construction company, how can you do your bit for the planet? The good news is that building a greener future is much easier than you might think, and there are some serious benefits for your business as well as the environment.

If you like the sound of an improved company reputation, reducing your operating costs and demonstrating compliance, then ISO 14001 is perfect for you.

ISO 14001 is an internationally recognised standard that sets out the requirements for an environmental management system. The standard can help your construction company stand out from the rest and win the trust of stakeholders. This is achieved through focussing on environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste, which is particularly important as, throughout the construction cycle, large quantities of waste are produced.
